Director Ron Howard proves his ability to create exciting action sequences and a vivid eye for period detail. The film is beautiful to look at, but the story is simplistically told and lacks a solid coherent narrative. It’s easy to watch, but hard to remember much later. In the Heart of the Sea captures both the conflict of man vs nature, and, at times, man vs himself. The actors in this film immerse themselves in their roles, and the turbulence and danger of life at sea will keep you on the edge of your seat. All in all this is a well rounded movie that blends action, suspense, and effective character development.
